What we do
We build tools that answer one money question each, and show the working so you can check it. Our guides explain the official rules in plain English, with a quick checker that points you to the right next step and the GOV.UK page to confirm it.
The site is aimed at sole traders, small business owners, landlords and households in the UK. Rates and rules are for England, Wales and Northern Ireland unless a page says otherwise.
How we research our figures
- Official sources. We aim to base every rate, threshold and allowance on GOV.UK, HMRC guidance or HMRC’s internal manuals, and each page links the sources it uses so you can check them yourself.
- Workings shown. Calculators show the sums behind each result, so you can follow them or compare them with your own figures.
- Worked examples. We aim to check each calculator against examples worked out by hand when it’s built or changed.
- Updates. We aim to update pages when tax rules change, but we can’t guarantee every page is current at all times.
Check the date before you rely on a page
Each page shows a “Last updated” date near the top. The page reflects the rules as we understood them on that date. Tax rates, thresholds and rules change, usually from 6 April each year but sometimes during the year, so always confirm with the official GOV.UK links on the page before relying on anything here, especially if the date is from an earlier tax year.
If a page was last updated before the current tax year started, it shows a warning at the top saying it may be out of date.
What our tools are, and aren’t
Our calculators give estimates and our guides give general information. They aren’t financial, tax or legal advice, and we aren’t regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We accept no responsibility for decisions made using this site. For decisions that depend on your circumstances, speak to an accountant, a tax adviser or HMRC.
- Calculators run in your browser. What you type into them isn’t sent to us.
- We don’t currently take payment to feature products or change results.
- We may show advertising in future to keep the site free. We aim to label adverts clearly and keep them separate from results and guidance.
Corrections
If you spot something that’s wrong or out of date, please tell us. We aim to check reports against the official source and correct confirmed errors, updating the “Last updated” date on the page.
